In India cataract has been reported to be responsible for 50-80% of the bilaterally blind in the country.
Of the 1.3 billion population in India, an estimated 5 million people are blind.

PROBLEM!

Untreated cataract cases are the main cause of blindness in India, in up to 66.2 percent of cases. This was revealed in a report prepared by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, after examining 85,135 persons over 50 years of age between 2015 to 2019 through the door-to-door survey.

The survey revealed that 1.99 percent were blind, 12.92 percent have a severe visual impairment and 9.81 percent have a moderate visual impairment. While untreated cataract has caused blindness in 66.2 percent cases.

Many people around the world are living with eyesight issues purely because they can’t afford the medical bills associated with corrective treatments. Not only does this mean that they cannot see, but it may mean they cannot work and thus those around them are also impacted by their eyesight issues.

SOLUTION!

We partner with Billimorawala Hospital in Navsari, Gujarat to provide free eye examinations, operations, and after-care for those who would not otherwise be able to afford treatment. Set up in 1977, the hospital has treated more than 2.1 million people and operated on more than 250,000, with almost 70% at no cost to the patient. The hospital also conducts regular eye camps where people can get free eye screenings and tests.
